DEDICATE SHAFT TO PIONEER OF LYKENS VALLEY

LOYALTON, 28 November 1924 — A marble shaft in honor of John Peter Hoffman, early pioneer in the upper end of Lykens Valley, was dedicated by the Hoffman Association yesterday afternoon, marking the place where he and twenty-six other pioneers are buried. The monument stands in an open field of a farm near here owned by Elmer Romberger.
The Rev. F. J. Matter, pastor of the Lutheran Church of Lykens, delivered the dedicating address. Evelyn Hoffman and Esther Buck, both of Harrisburg, granddaughters of W. H. G. Hoffman, president of the association, unveiled the monument….
A broad ax that was brought to this country by John Peter Hoffman in 1739 was exhibited at the dedication. It was chipped and broken, showing the wear of the 200 years of its existence.
