A 1916 photograph of a summer picnic at Glen Park, Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
The photograph has been identified as a neighborhood kids outing, and the chaperone is William V. Bowman, the elderly man at right holding a child (#3 in the number key below). His son, Walter Bowman, is at far right holding the dog (#24 in the number key below). Also identified in the photograph is Della [Rettinger] Bowman, Walter’s wife, woman with glasses in center of back row (#12 in the number key below). Jean [Bowman] Cunningham, Walter’s daughter, is next to her (#17 in the number key below).
It is possible, because of the number of baskets in the photo, that the children also did some huckleberry picking, which was done on the mountain paths.
In addition to neighborhood kids, it is believed that several of the younger children are members of the Bowman and Cunningham families, i.e., grandchildren of William V. Bowman. Perhaps also, there are children who attended the United Brethren Church in Lykens.
A number key is provided to assist any blog readers who can identify others who are pictured.
