FUNERAL SATURDAY FOR AGED RESIDENT
John H. Bonawitz, age 92 years, 6 months and 25 days, Elizabethville‘s oldest resident, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin L. Rowe, with whom he resided, after an illness of several weeks. He had been a resident of this community sixty-four years.
Mr. Bonawitz was a son of the late Jonathan Bonawitz and Catharine [Lenker] Bonawitz, and was a native of Mifflin Township.
He was a graduate of the Berrysburg Seminary and had been a teacher in the MIfflin Township and Elizabethville Schools eighteen years. Earlier in life he engaged in the trade of carpenter, and had also been associated with the Bonawitz and Uhler store many years. He was an assessor of the Borough thirty-six years.
Mr. Bonawitz was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, town. He had held a number of church offices, was a former member of the Church Council and had been financial secretary of the congregation forty-two years, and was serving in that office at the time of his death. He had also been a lay delegate of the Pennsylvania Ministerium to the United Lutheran Church conference in Chicago.
He is survived by a number of nephews and nieces, including Mr. Rowe. His wife, who was the former Miss Sara Ellen Webner, died in 1931.
Services will be held from the residence at 1:45 o’clock Saturday afternoon, with further services in Salem Lutheran Church. The pastor, Rev. W. Z. Artz will officiate and interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the residence Friday evening from 7 to 9 o’clock.
