Robert L. “Whitey” Koppenhaver, son of Homer Gilbert Koppenhaver and Fronie F. [Shadle] Kopenhaver, of Hegins, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, was a minor league baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals organization, the Philadelphia Athletics organization, and the Baltimore Orioles organization, from 1948-1950, and from 1953-1954. His time in professional baseball was interrupted by the Korean Conlict, He was born in Hegins on 5 July 1927, and died at Geisinger Medical Center, Danvile, Montour County, Pennsylvania, on 13 April 2018.
His obituary, from the Buffington Reed Funeral Home, stated the following about his baseball career:
Whitey played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. After entering the US Army he played for the 26th Infantry baseball team, winning the European Championship in 1951. After returning home from the Army he played for the Williamsport Athletics and ended his base ball career in 1954 with the Baltimore Orioles.
He was also a member of the St Clair Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame and the Pottsville Chapter of the Baseball Hall of Fame…. He was very active as a coach in little league, teener league, Legion, and Tri-Valley High School baseball.
