George S. Wingard, 57, of 698 E. Center Street, passed away last Thursday night at the Harrisburg Hospital, where he had been a patient for some time.
He was the son of the late Custer Wingard and Ella [Stubblebine] Wingard, of Millersburg, where he was born 18 November 1893.
During World War I he served with the 318th Fire and Guard Company, U.S. Army.
Mr. Wingard was a carpenter by trade.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Tahoe Tribe of Red Men, Perseverance Lodge of Odd Fellows, and Steever R. Day Post, No. 326, American Legion, of this place. He was a Post Commander of the Post and for many years Post Chaplain.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Zella [Cook] Wingard; a son, Robert G. Wingard, Romney, West Virginia; a daughter, Mrs. Janet Groff, Millersburg R.D.; a brother, and two sisters, W. Stuart Wingard and Mrs. Homer VanAiken, Amsterdam, New York, and Mrs. William Etsweiler, Millersburg, and a grandson.
Services were held from the Sterner Funeral Home, 217 North Street, Monday at 2 p.m., Rev. James W. Emerick, officiating. Military rites were conducted by Steever R. Day Post, No. 326, American Legion, and interment made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
