A one-cent postal card bearing the circular date stamp of the Gratz Post Office, Gratz, Pennsylvania, 3 August 1903. The card is Scott Type PC10 and was issued in 1902 in memory of President William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901.
The addressee was Clarence E. Twombly of The Pigeon News of Boston.
A machine postmark at the bottom of the card indicates it was received the next day, 4 August 1904.
However, in examining the back of the postal card, it appears that for some unknown reason, the card was first sent to Elizabethville, where it was received the same day that it was mailed from Gratz. The Elizabethville Post Office marked it “Received” and then sent the card on its way to the addressee in Boston.
The Pigeon News was a publication of interest to those interested in raising pigeons.
George Umholtz (1885-1947) of Gratz, may have been the one requesting the information. However, according to the 1910 Census, he was a barber, not a raiser of pigeons. Perhaps what he received from Mr. Twombly didn’t interest him enough to purse pigeon-raising as an occupation.
