DR. J. PHILIP ROBINSON
Dr. J. Philip Robinson, 64, former director of the emergency department of Pottsville Hospital and a physician in Tremont for 33 years, died Sunday evening in Pottsville Hospital.
He was a graduate of Wilbur Wright High School, Dayton, Ohio, and graduated magna cum laude from Wake Forest College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Bowman-Gray Medical School, Winston-Salem.
Dr. Robinson was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He served in Hawaii and Guam.
He initiated the emergency service program at Pottsville Hospital in 1978 and served as director of that department until 1984.
He was a past medical director of South Central Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Services.
Dr. Robinson opened his office in Tremont in 1956 and closed it in 1972, then reopened it in 1985.
He became a member of the Pottsville Hospital staff in 1954.
He was a member of Schuylkill County and Pennsylvania Medical Societies and American Medical Association.
He was a member of the former Tremont School Board and went on the serve on Pine Grove Area School Board after the merger of the districts.
He was a licensed private pilot.
Dr. Robinson was a member of the American Geriatric Society, Swatara Lodge 267, F&AM, Tremont, Scottish Rite, Tremont Fire Company No. 1 and Tremont American Legion Post 384.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio, a son of the late James S. Robinson and Florence [Phillips] Robinson.
Surviving are his wife, the former Anne Ellen Conrad; two sons, John W. C. Robinson, Minersville, and James Robinson Jr., at home; a daughter, Florence Monger, Tremont; three grandchildren, Ashley Robinson and Laura Robinson, and Sarah Monger; two brothers Fred Robinson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ralph Robinson, Mesa, Arizona.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from W. F. Minnig Funeral Home, 120 E. Main St., Tremont. The Rev. George B. Carvell, St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, will officiate. There will be calling hours Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Tremont.
