An undated photograph, probably taken around the time of World War II, of timbermen at work in an underground mine. According to the information accompanying this photo, it was the timbermen who made the mine passages safe and it was the skill of the timbermen that kept the passages open so that the colliery could work at full production.
Timber was used rather than steel because of its ability to bend under pressure.
