Millersburg Aviator Loses Plane In Fire
Fire early last Thursday morning destroyed a hangar of the Eastern School of Aviation at the Penn-Harris Airport, east of Harrisburg.
Origin of the blaze is unknown, but the loss is estimated at $20,000. The flames were discovered by D. H. Cutler, a watchman, who resided at the airport with his wife and child.
The Lawnton Fire Company responded to an alarm, which was answered later by fire companies from Steelton, Harrisburg, Oberlin and Enhaut. The building was 40 x 146 feet and housed a laboratory and aviation school. A Challenger bi-plane, the property of Marion U. Gilbert of Millersburg, was destroyed as were five airplane motors and other equipment in the building. The loss is partially covered by insurance.
Fire companies prevented the spread of the flames to adjoining hangars and buildings of the airport which is located near Paxtang, east of Harrisburg and near the fair grounds. The Harrisburg municipal airport is located near New Cumberland on the west shore of the Susquehanna River.
