This photograph was believed to be taken about 1919 of the pupils of the Geise School in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
The school was also known as the Gise School and was in existence for 100 years from about 1854 to 1954 when it closed and students from this part of the township began attending school in Gratz Borough.
Only a few persons have been identified in this photograph. Based on the age of Kathryn [Dietrich] Gasbarro (born 19 February 1915), who is in the front row of the picture ,it is possible that the picture is from 1920 or 1921 and not 1919 as previously presumed.
A numbering scheme has been presented so readers can submit identifications.
Positive identifications thus far:
Susan Naomi [Dietrich] Schoffstall (1906-1991), my great aunt, #12.
Sarah Ellen Dietrich (1915-1921), also my great aunt, #11. She shared a desk with my mother, Kathryn [Dietrich] Gasbarro, #10. Sara died of tetanus on Christmas Eve 1921 at the Millersburg Railroad Station while the family was waiting for a train to take her to Harrisburg for medical assistance.
Marlin Russell Dietrich (1908-1987), my great uncle, #33.
Mr. Henry E. Wenrich, the teacher, #34.
It is also possible that three other great uncles of mine are in this photograph but they have not been positively identified: Lauren Robert Dietrich (1911-1999), Lee Keiper Dietrich (1913-1939), and Harry Franklin Dietrich (1904-1978). The Dietrich farm was located a short distance from the Geise School.
Please add identifications, both possible and definite, as comments to this post, using the number key in the second photo.
I think #14 is my grandmother, Myrtle Heller Wiest. She is on the 1924 Geis School picture, also.
