An undated photograph of a registered cover mailed from the post office in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to H. B. Shaw, Alfred, Maine. The sender is not known.
The cover bears three stamps, the center one being a 15 cent design first issued in 1866 in honor of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The other two stamps, one honoring Washington and the other honoring Jefferson, total twenty-three cents postage. These stamps were part of a set in general use from 1861 to 1869, when the set was replaced by two other sets, one issued in 1869 and the other issued in 1870.
The circular town postmark is one of the earliest seen from Lykens.
Covers bearing the 15 cent Lincoln stamp are rare.
