In 1982, the Schuylkill County Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Squadron 402 relocated from Bendigo Airport in Rush Township, Dauphin County (near Tower City) to Joe Zerbey Airport in Buck Run, Schuylkill County. The reasons for the move were spelled out in the following article from the Pottsville Republican, 2 April 1982:
CAP to Relocate
The signing of a contract will complete arrangements to allow Schuylkill Composite Squadron 402, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), Auxiliary U. S. Air Force, to relocate at Joe Zerbey Airport, Buck Run.
Thursday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners reaffirmed Tuesday’s action to allow the squadron to use the county airport facilities. But on the advice of the airport advisory committee’s chairman, Dale F. Schoenerman, the board said a contract between CAP and the county outlining each party’s obligations should be inked.
Commissioner Albert J. Matunis‘s suggestion that the contract include that the relocation be done at no county cost was approved.
The airport advisory committee approved the location of the squadron at the airport last October in a letter to the commissioners.
The squadron is interested in moving to the county facility from the Bendigo Airport, Tower City, because it needs more space and wants a site that is open all year.
