Carl Alvin Scheib was born on 1 January 1927 in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the son of Oliver Darius Scheib (1896-1953) and Pauline Goldie [Wolfgang] Scheib (1899-1984).
He was a professional baseball player who holds the distinction of being the youngest player ever to start in an American League game, a record that will probably never be broken due to current age restrictions imposed by Major League Baseball. For most of his career he played for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League.
Scheib died on 24 March 2018 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. At the time of his death, he was one of the 100 oldest former major league players still alive.
During his career in the major leagues, which spanned from 1943 to 1954, at least one baseball card was issued for each year of his service. A selection of cards is shown below, all of which are from his time as a pitcher on the Philadelphia Athletics. For a short time in 1954 he played for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League; no baseball card has been seen which pictures him in a St. Louis uniform.
