A photograph taken of a street in Klingerstown, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, during the flood of 22 June 1972.
This small village with approximately fifty families located in the western end of the Mahantongo Valley was left completely isolated for hours during the June storm. Roads and bridges were washed away in every direction.
People in every home except three were washed out of their first floors, losing most of their furniture, appliances and valuables. One of the buildings spared by “Agnes” was the parsonage of St. Michael’s Church. Rev. Robert Johnson of St. Michael’s played a large role in helping the residents of the town. He housed many residents at the parsonage and it also served as a center for preparing meals and coordinating the restoration activities that had to be undertaken. All the business places in Klingerstown suffered heavy damage and it was weeks before any organized condition again existed.
