Troutman’s School, also known as Trautman’s School, was a one-room school house in the Spain section of Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. John D. Troutman collected stories of Spain and some of them were published in the Klingerstown Bicentennial Album in 2007. This one is entitled “Long Lovely Walk.”
Christy Boyer was a teacher in the Troutman’s School during the 1902-1903 term, and this was her first teaching job. Christy was living with her parents in Gratz, and to get to the school she had to walk along the path which crossed the Mahantongo Mountains to the Spain area.
It was a long, lonely walk, and in the winter snow blizzards made it hazardous. Christy’s parents were concerned. One day, the snow had become especially deep, so Christy’s mother insisted that Miriam Boyer, a younger sister should accompany her to the school. Mrs. Boyer thought that is some problem developed, one of the sisters could get help.
