A photograph of four shaft engines (or motors) that were used to move the two elevators up and down the Short Mountain Colliery Shaft of the Lykens Valley Coal Company, Bear Gap, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, in 1915. It took a pair of engines to move each elevator. Cables were attached to the elevator to lower and raise it. As the elevator was lowered, the cable unwound from one spool and was taken up by the other. As the elevator was raised, the opposite happened. Each spool was about 12 feet in diameter.
