An undated photograph of the hearse of the Lykens Valley Coal Company, Bear Gap, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. This vehicle was also known as “the Black Mariah.” It was only used to transport miners who died at work to their homes, where the undertaker would be called to prepare the body for burial. It was not a good sign when this hearse was seen on a country road near the mines.
