A 21st century view of the Crossroads Sale and Market, also known as the Crossroads Auction, located west of Gratz at the junction of the Crossroads and Route 25. The photo was taken from Route 25, looking south.
For many years, a weekly country auction has been held here on Friday nights. Area farmers and other businesses rent stalls inside the huge, sprawling, all-weather building, while in late spring through early fall, outside stalls provide additional sales space. Locally made baked goods, sausages, canned goods and fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats can be regularly found at the Crossroads. In addition, there are food stands and a variety of sundries always available.
This property was originally part of a larger tract known as Hickory Bottom, which was given by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Nicholas Hoffman in 1785. In 1875, the land was part of a 156 acre farm owned by Reuben Riegle.
