A 1950 newspaper photograph of the new cafeteria at the Pine Grove High School, Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
A brief article appeared with the photo:
Citizens of Pine Grove and vicinity will have an opportunity to inspect their new high school cafeteria, pictured above next Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 at “ope house.”
Providing everything works out according to plan, the cafeteria will officially start operation next Wednesday morning with Mrs. Stella Neal in charge and Mrs. Ida Hand as her assistant. Under a proposed plan, senior girls of the Home Economics department will serve as student assistants during serving time.
It is believed that close to 300 township and borough students will take advantage of the chance to enjoy hot meals daily right at school. A recent survey taken by Marvin G. Werley, supervising principal, revealed that 263 of the 396 students in Junior and Senior High Schools, expressed intention of eating in the cafeteria.
Construction of the cafeteria was no burden whatever on the taxpayer, and furthermore, once in full operation, the project will be entirely self-supporting. Regular course meals will be available to all students and employees of the school district at a minimum cost of 20 cents per meal. For each Type A meal a balanced meal with one-half pint of milk, the district will receive a reimbursement of 9 cents from the state.
The cafeteria, located on the lower floor, directly beneath the gymnasium, includes a modern kitchen 16 ft. by 30 ft., and a main dining hall that measures 32 ft. by 40.
Both Mrs. Neal and Mrs. Hand will be present to answer any questions visitors may want to ask during the public inspection Monday and Tuesday night.
