The Porter Tunnel mine disaster occurred on March 1, 1977, near Tower City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Related photos appeared in editions of the Evening Herald, Pottsville, on subsequent dates.
Cars loaded with coal by rescue workers roll out of the Porter Tunnel as the tedious process of digging a tunnel through solid coal continues toward the spot where one miner is alive and awaiting liberation. Seven others are still lost in the mine, their fate unknown. (UPI)
