An undated color photograph of the brick house on the southwest corner of Pine Street and West Market Street, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
It is believed that this home was built around 1836 for Elizabeth [Fry] Shindel. It is also believed that Theodore Gratz (1811-1863) lived here when he was the first Burgess of Gratz just before the Civil War. Since that time it has been known as the “Gratz House.”
Jennie [Keiper] Dietrich (1876-1967) lived here with her daughter Laura Dietrich (1900-1989) in the 1950s and 1960s. The house was then owned by George Adams, whose estate sold it after 1974. The new owners ripped the stately porch off the front of the house claiming that it did not correctly fit the colonial design. Pictures of the house prior to 1974 show the porch, which it is believed was original at the time of construction.
