An undated photo post card depicting the Old Camel Back Bridge over the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Built 1812-1817 Torn Down 1902
By an act of the Legislature, approved April 2, 1811, the Governor was authorized and directed to subscribe a sum not exceeding $90,000, to the stock of the Bridge company. It was the longest bridge in the world and a marvelous engineering feat at that date. It marks the high water mark of the Rebellion [Civil War] as the Rebel Scouts appeared at a point within one quarter of a mile of the bridge just prior to the battle of Gettysburg. The section of the bridge touching the Harrisburg shore was destroyed by fire May 25, 1866.
