A fire of unknown origin destroyed a bridge of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad at Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. A brief story of the incident was reported by the West Schuylkill Press on July 28, 1939:
OLD PINE GROVE BRIDGE BURNED
The Reading Railroad wooden bridge over Swatara Creek, connecting Stanhope and Pine Grove was destroyed by fire of unknown origin about 2 o’clock Monday morning.
The bridge, one of the longest of its type in this section, was located near the Pine Grove ball park, and railroad service over it had been discontinued with the exception of occasional excursion trains.
Pine Grove authorities are at a loss to account for the fire as no trains passed over it recently. A cigarette stub could have caused the blaze as the bridge was tinder dry because of lack of rains.
