A representation of the Clemson Island House, on Clemson Island in the Susquehanna River across from Halifax, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, produced on a wood block by Hometowne Collectibles for the Halifax Area Historical Society.
On the back of the block is the following description of the Clemson House:
THE (PEACH) CLEMSON ISLAND HOUSE
The white frame house was built in 1852 by Leonard Clemson (1800-1892) eldest son of island purchaser Jehu Clemson (1774-1837).
Leonard was its farmer for many years followed by son Leonard W. Clemson, then by his son Alfred Buchanan Clemson, and then by his son John Wesley Clemson. The last of the Clemsons to farm there were Guy Clemson and his sister May Clemson, with her husband Frank Klinger.
The flood of 1936 ended the Clemson residence on Clemson Island. May Klinger and Frank Klinger resettled near Halifax and Guy Clemson moved to 3rd Street, Halifax. The last Clemson owners of the island were Charles Clemson and his parents; they sold it in 1953. An Indian Village on the Island eventually became a sanctuary for Bird Life.
This was the 13th in a series of these small block collectibles sponsored by the Halifax Area Historical Society. For information on the availability of this item and other items in the series, contact the society through its Facebook page.
