VALLEY VIEW MAN DROWNED WHEN HE FELL INTO DAM; HIS COMPANION WAS SAVED
Gurney Herb, aged 25, is dead and James Schwalm, aged about 38, had a narrow escape from death as a result of falling into Romberger’s Dam near Valley View, Friday afternoon at about 1:30 o’clock.
The men were discovered floundering about the water by some small children, who had the sense to run for help. By the time older people reached the scene Herb had drowned, but Schwalm still retained the spark of life. It took several hours of strenuous work on the part of Dr. Strausser, of Valley View, to resuscitate him.
Herb, who was a single man, is the son of Mrs. Elmer Klinger, of Valley View, while Schwalm is married and the father of several children. Dr. Sausser, who is the deputy coroner for that district is making an investigation of the case. They tried to walk across the breast of the dam. No date has been set for the inquest into Herb’s death.
