An advertisement for the Grand Opening of the Carton Brothers Store, 519 Main Street, Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from the Lykens Standard, May 22, 1936.
The store explained the following in it sale ad, announcing the opening for Saturday, Mary 23 [1936] at 9 A. M.:
Although we have done our utmost to secure a complete stock for our GRAND OPENING SALE, many items will not arrive in time and consequently cannot be included in this our first price-slashing event. in a short time our stock will be completed enabling us to serve your wearing apparel needs completely at lowest prices for quality merchandise. Goods purchased and proving unsatisfactory can be exchanged or if you prefer, money will be cheerfully refunded.
The Lykens Standard also printed a news item on page 1 of the same edition:
MAX CARTON TO OPEN APPAREL SHOP SATURDAY
Carton Brothers for the past twenty years proprietors of a Women’s and Children’s Apparel shop in Tower City, will hold the Grand Opening of the Lykens Store tomorrow. The store will be managed by Max Carton, junior partner of the firm.
On page three of this issue of the Standard will be found an advertisement offering a line of Men’s, Women’s and Children’s wearing apparel at unusually low prices.
The Carton Brothers will occupy the store room of Reiff and Helt, formerly the A. & P. location.
The “unusually low prices” in the ad were quite varied and when the price of the same type of item for women and men are compared, there is a wide difference in the cost. For example, women’s stockings are 49 cents, while men’s dress hose are only 9 cents. However, women’s cotton socks could be had for 10 cents a pair and women’s silk hose could be had for 14 cents a pair.
