An article in the West Schuylkill Herald, Tower City, February 17, 1961, accompanied the photo and caption:
Two west end women postmasters retired from the U. S. Postal Service, were honored at a dinner given last Saturday evening by the Postmasters Association of Western Schuylkill County.
The affair was a complete surprise to Mrs. Rose Ganley, Tower City, postmaster who refired January 31 [1961] and to Miss Elizabeth Unger of Muir, who retired a few months ago.
The dinner was held at the American Legion Home, Tremont. Postmaster Albert Kutzer was master of ceremonies.
The outstanding service to their communities given by the retiring postmasters was commended by the Postal service officials who attended the dinner.
Donald S. Stevens of Reading, field services officer, said that the small town postmaster must know everything about the postal service — in larger communities, the postmaster can refer many matters to employees under her direction. He complimented the Western Schuylkill Postmasters for their devotion to their jobs and said it is a fine idea for them to meet regularly to discuss new postal regulations and work them out together.
Another speaker, Arthur A. Mattern of Emmaus, delivery services officer, said that he could not begin to review all the fine things that might be said about the retiring postmasters and he commended the group for planning the dinner party to tell Mrs. Ganley and Miss Unger that their work as postmasters is appreciated.
Mr. Mattern spoke of the unique position of the postmaster in his or her own community. They contact every home and no person in the community is not touched by the postmaster’s service, whether it is good or bad.
Quoting from President Kennedy’s inaugural address when he said, “this is the time for us to ask not what the country can do for us, but what we can do for the country.” Mr. Mattern said that this should be the personal motto of every postmaster.
Congratulations and good wishes to the two retiring postmasters were expressed by Pottsville Postmaster Harrwood E. Hobbs; by Miss Kathryn Monahan of Centralia, who is Vice President of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters; and by J. G. Bullard of Pottsville, postal inspector.
Both Mrs. Ganley and Miss Unger were presented with gifts from their fellow postmasters, each receiving a gold pin with a pearl setting. The gift presentation was made by Jennie A. Evans, postmaster at Orwin.
A roast beef and pork dinner prepared by the Legion steward was served by members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary to Brennan Keip Post.
Among those from Tower City and Porter Township and vicinity attending were: Robert Faust, acting postmaster at Tower City; Kathryn L. Fessler, acting postmaster at Muir; Postmaster and Mrs. Workman and Bertha M. Reiner, of Reinerton; Mrs. Jennie Evans, postmaster, and Muriel Z. Bettinger, clerk, at Orwin; Larry Showers, clerk, Richard J. Riskis, clerk, Roy Adams, rural carrier, Tower City; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ganly, Williamstown; Postmaster and Mrs. Charles O.
