An August 2021 GoogleMaps street view photograph of the United States Post Office, Tower City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Construction on this building began with the groundbreaking in November 1960. The Post Office is located on the former site of the Tower Theatre, 6th Street and Route 209.
In the November 11, 1960, issue of the West Schuylkill Herald, a photograph of the groundbreaking ceremony was published along with names of all those pictured — plus an interesting comment on the success of the independent miners in getting the building heated with coal rather than oil as originally planned.
GROUND BREAKING HELD FOR NEW TOWER CITY POST OFFICE
Construction of the new post office on the site of the former Tower Theatre, will begin next week. Protests by the Independent Miners, Rep. W. K. Knecht and Congressman Ivor D. Fenton were successful in having the furnace and air conditioning unit changed from oil fuel to anthracite coal. This required a larger basement for coal storage and furnace, which caused a slight delay in starting the construction. The building will be completed before April 1, the date having been extended from January 1st [1961].
