NEW ASSOCIATE PASTOR ELECTED
The Pine Grove Lutheran Charge, comprising of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pine Grove and Hetzel’s (Salem) Lutheran Church, Pine Grove RD3, have elected George James Mathews of Margate, New Jersey, as an associate pastor. He will work with the Rev. Mr. Frederick I. Fisher, pastor of the charge.
The new pastor, a graduate of Atlantic City High School in 1962 and Muhlenberg College, Allentown, in 1967, with a major in psychology, will be graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia May 14, 1971, with the degree of Master of Divinity.
During the summer of 1968, he participated in a 12-week program of “Clinical Pastoral Education” at the Crozier-Chester Medical Center as part of the seminary education.
From July 1, 1969 through August 31, 1970, Mr. Mathews served as intern-pastor under the supervision of the Rev. Mr. Richard C. Wolf at St. James Lutheran Church in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania. St. James is a member of the Southern Lehigh Neighborhood Lutheran Parish, a cooperative ministry of six Lutheran congregations begun nine months prior to the formation of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod. During the internship, he served as a staff member to the Synod’s Youth Leadership Development School which was held at Muhlenberg College.
The new pastor will be ordained at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Atlantic City, New Jersey, at a date in June not yet specified.
Mr. Mathews is married to the former Kathryn V. Linn. The ceremony was performed May 18, 1968 in Old Zionsville, Pennsylvania, by the Rev. Mr. Christian Schenck, pastor of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and by the Rev. Mr. Luther J. Linn, native of Tremont, father of the bride.
The Linns are currently living in Auburn, Schuylkill County, where the Rev. Mr. Linn is serving St. John’s Lutheran Church as well as the Lutheran congregation of Zion (Red) Church of Orwigsburg.
The new pastor will start his ministry in Pine Grove on June 1st.
