An undated photograph of a coal miner’s family, possibly from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
The photo, which is from the Schuylkill County Historical Society, was published in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, January 26, 1980. The text is by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the society.
The family was a closely-knit unit throughout mining towns and “patches” of Schuylkill County. The fortunes and necessities of the times forged an independence making a oneness of the keystone of a country moving forward in a wave of progress. At right is a picture of a typical mining “patch” in the upper region of Schuylkill County. The photo was most likely taken past the turn of the century. The family, seemingly well-clothes and few, by their expressions show the sternness of their living and of the times in which they did so.
