An undated colorized newspaper photograph of the Red Church Log School House near Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, a building which dates to 1765.
The photo appeared in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, November 10, 1979, which was presented by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the Schuylkill County Historical Society. The photo is from the historical society’s collection. The text was written by Hanney:
The tall spire of historic Red Church is a memorable landmark in Schuylkill County. The first school in the area, located next to the present Red Church on Route 61 below Orwigsburg, was built in 1765 as the Lutheran Parochial School, and contained quarters for the schoolmaster. As an additional duty, the schoolmaster played the organ led the singing in the church at all public services, including funerals. The original building, as extended over the years, exists yet today in a moderate, updated form.
