A 1983 photograph of construction of a wilderness shelter at Camp Hebron, Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The individual pictured is identified as W. Lee Roland of Mechanicsburg.
The idea for the establishment of a Christian retreat came from a group of Mennonite pastors who wanted to create a place away from the city where individuals could have a place to have a direct relationship with nature.
The purchase of the land for Camp Hebron was made in 1957. Part of the camp is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail and a lake is part of the facility.
Although it was founded by Mennonites, it was established as non-denominational Christian camp and operates as such. Nature experiences include horseback riding, outdoor sports, and swimming.
Facilities include housing for permanent employees and utility connections for campers and trailers.
