An undated post card view of “The Arch”, a bridge over the Swatara Creek, Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
The photo of the post card appeared in the “Down Memory Lane” feature of the Pine Grove Herald, August 12, 1971, along with the following caption:
“The Arch” — site of the traditional swimming hole for Pine Grove boys for generations. The fine stone railroad bridge crossing the Little Swatara Creek was demolished by the railroad company, leaving only portions of an abutment. In the old days, a boy knew he had achieved manhood when he had the courage to jump off the top of the bridge into the creek below. The bridge is gone; the swimming hole is still used by youngsters from the area. The photograph is credited to the late Alvin C. Schwalm.
