The first visit of Harry Truman as president to Pottsville occurred on October 21, 1952, and according to the Pottsville newspaper, he was the first sitting president to ever visit the city. He arrived at the Pottsville station of the Reading Railroad, where the above photograph was taken.
Truman the rode through the streets of Pottsville enroute to Pottsville High School Stadium where he delivered a nighttime address to 8,000 people. Accompanying him in the official car were:
Front Seat: George Heffner, Mayor of Pottsville; James J. Curran, Judge; and James Ryan, Democratic Party Chairman.
Back Seat: Harry Truman; Guy K. Bard, U. S. Senate candidate.
