From the Shamokin News Dispatch, January 6, 1950:
FORMER RESIDENT OF SHAMOKIN DIES
Garfield Boyd, former Shamokin resident and widely known as a baseball pitcher when he was a young man, died in a Philadelphia hospital or complications resulting from a recent illness.
Boyd was a resident of Shamokin from birth until he moved to Philadelphia three years ago, where he lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sarge. The former Shamokin resident was rated as one of the best southpaw pitchers ever to play with area baseball teams. He was a member of Liberty Fire Company and was active in affairs of that organization while living in Shamokin.
Garfield Boyd was born on August 3, 1881, and died on January 4, 1950. He is buried at the Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Aristes, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
His minor league baseball statistics are slim; in 1909, he played in only one game with the Roanoke Tigers, an unaffiliated team in the Virginia League. See: Baseball Reference.
