JUDGE ROBERT E. WOODSIDE JR., 93
Retired Superior Court Judge Robert E. Woodside Jr., 93, of 351 Union Street, Millersburg, died Wednesday at Sun City Hospital, Sun City, Arizona.
Born in Millersburg, June 4, 1904, he was a son of the late Robert E. Woodside and Ellen [Neitz] Woodside.
He was a graduate of Millersburg High School and Dickinson College and Dickinson School of Law, both of Carlisle and held doctoral degrees from both Dickinson College and the school of law.
He was a former educator, state Superior Court judge, Pennsylvania Attorney General and co-founder of Mette, Evans and Woodside law firm, Harrisburg.
He served five terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He was a Republican floor leader in the State House, a judge of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas, a past chairman of the Pennsylvania Council of Juvenile Court Judges. As a Superior Court judge he received the nomination of both parties and had the highest vote ever cast for this position.
He was a chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission of Constitutional Revision with many of his constitutional law and juvenile opinions still being followed today.
He was a delegate for the National Constitution Convention of 1968 and a delegate of the National Republican convention nomination of Dwight D. Eisenhower for president and was a member of that platform committee.
In 1961, as Pennsylvania Attorney General, he received national recognition for his position on prison riots, racketeering and prison reform.
He was a president of the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania Industrial School at Camp Hill which revived and reformed the juvenile prison system in 1953.
He was a former chairman of the American Cancer Society, the Tuberculous and Health Society of Dauphin and Perry County, chairman of Tri-County Mental Health and Salvation Army of Pennsylvania.
He was a founder of the Millersburg and Upper Paxton [Township] Historical Society; member of Keystone Boy Scouts; board member of Harrisburg Hospital and Holy Spirit Hospital and received the Ben Franklin award.
He was a member of Supreme Council of 33rd degree Mason, a 32nd degree member of the Valley of Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Millersburg Forest No. 125; the eldest past member of Susquehanna Lodge No. 364 F. & A. M.; a member of the Committee of Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, F. Fairlee [Habbert] Woodside; a son William Woodside.
Surviving are his wife, the former Anna C. [Revwer] Signor; a daughter, Jane F. Woodside, Millersburg; a son, Robert E. Woodside, Millersburg; a step-daughter, Ruth McCarty, Portland, Oregon; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Private graveside and burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg. Hoover Funeral Home, Millersburg is in charge of arrangement.
