A photograph of John Shive in his World War II uniform. The photo is from the Sweigard General Store World War II Collection, Matamoras, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Shive was born on June 24, 1919, in Halifax, Dauphin County, and died on April 3, 1976, in Hazelton Mills, McKean County, Pennsylvania. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
The photo was one of more than 60 photos collected by Gladys [Parmer] Sweigard (1922-2022), owner of the general store. The photos represented the active duty military soldiers and sailors who used the store phone, one of the only phones in the rural area, to make contact with their families during the war. Gladys posted all the photos on the wall near the phone. The collection was made available to David Hause of the Halifax area by Lynette [Sweigard] Schlegel, daughter of Gladys Sweigard. All of the photos are now posted on individual Findagrave Memorials. They also have been posted to family trees on Ancestry.com.
