DR. STANLEY W. DOE – Almost a Centenarian!
Dr. Stanley W. Doe, 99, of Tower City, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 23, 2022 at his home.
Born in South Portland, Maine, June 30, 1922, a son of the late William E. Doe and Louine A. [Thompson] Doe. He was a United States Army Veteran of WW II.
Dr. Doe was a graduate of the Harrisburg Academy, Bates College and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following graduation starting in 1950-52 he was a specialist in internal medicine at the Harrisburg Hospital, from 1952-57 he was in private practice in Blaine, Perry County, Pennsylvania. In 1957, Dr. Doe moved to Tower City and started his family practice. He also took weekend calls for the maternity Hospital in Lykens, where he met his future wife Sara Koppenhaver, R. N. He was a former physician member of the Tower-Porter Community Ambulance.
Dr. Doe retired in 1992, a career spanning over three decades taking care of the resident of Tower City and the surrounding communities. During those years, he was awarded numerous awards including; the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated Humanitarian Services by the Lions Club International Foundation. In 1987, Dr. Doe was recognized as the Tower City–Porter Township Rotary Club Citizen of the Year, in which the day of September 26 was proclaimed as Dr. Stanley W. Doe Day. He was also recognized by the Williams Valley High School and Midget Football teams along with cheerleaders for countless years of outstanding and dedicated service as a physician to the programs as well as the physician for the Williams Valley School District.
He was a member of the Muir Foursquare Church and a life member of the Tower Porter Lions Club, where he was honored for his many years of dedication to community services in June of 1992. Dr. Doe was an avid reader and also enjoyed collecting stamps, but above all his family was his pride and joy. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Sara [Koppenhaver] Doe in 2019 and a sister, Helen Hall.
Surviving are his five children, William Doe and his wife Penni Doe; Edward Doe; Elizabeth Tran and her husband Kim Tran; James Doe; and Sally Doe, all of Tower City. A stepdaughter, Gail Harlin (husband Danny Harlin), Texas, eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A viewing for family and friends will took place on Sunday, February 27, 2022 from 6-8 pm from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Home, Inc., Tower City. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 11:00 am from the Chapel with Pastor Luke Heald officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Greenwood Cemetery [Tower City].
