A membership or supporter pin dated 1949-1950, for the Gratz Athletic Association. This pin was advertised for sale as representing Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. However, there is no indication in the available local newspapers that there was a Gratz Athletic Association in Gratz at that time. An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, December 14, 1949, notes that there was a Gratz Athletic Association at Simon Gratz High School, Philadelphia. That high school was named after the grandson of the man credited with founding the town of Gratz, Pennsylvania. The Gratz High School in Philadelphia was an accredited four-year school, while the Gratz High School in Gratz, Pennsylvania, was never able to achieve accreditation because its program never had a 12th grade.
Perhaps someone reading this blog post can definitely answer whether the pin represents Gratz, Pennsylvania, or Gratz High School in Philadelphia.
