“Jim Crow” in Millersburg? Here is a series of “help wanted” ads from Harrisburg newspapers, all seeking employees for work at the Hotel Koppenhaver, Millersburg.
It was common practice to request that applicants were of a specific race, gender, or age. And, as this selection of ads show, beginning in 1904, the hotel was seeking a “lady” cook and a dining room “girl in 1904.

By 1907, the hotel wanted a “good” dining room “girl” and an up-stairs “girl.”

A few weeks later in 1907, the hotel was seeking a “good white woman” cook “for small country hotel.”

By 1910, it was a “good dining room girl.”

And, a “first-class” cook; good wages; give references.

But also, a “white girl” to do up-stairs work.
_______________________________________
A “white woman cook” was needed in 1911 – and also a “dining room girl.”
_______________________________________
Finally, in 1914, all the Hotel Koppenhaver wanted was a “reliable cook.”
