This obituary appeared in the Lykens Standard, February 15, 1924:
GEORGE W. SCHREFFLER
George Washington Schreffler, aged 66 years, 10 months and 12 days of 6419 Beechwood Street, Philadelphia, was found dead at his place of employment with a building construction operation at Rittenhouse Street and Stenton Avenue, Philadelphia, Friday night of last week.
As one who lies down to slumber, so did the end come to Mr. Schreffler. His employment hours were from 4 P. M. to 10 o’clock with one hour for supper at 6:00 P. M. As usual he was with the family at supper but his visit to the home at 9:00 P. M. was missed. Mrs. Schreffler became worried and asked her son Eugene upon his arrival home that he go see why Mr. Schreffler did not come home at 9, feeling that possibly he was taken ill. The young man went to the place of his employment and found there was no light as usual in the building where he worked. After calling and making an attempt to locate his father, the young man burst through a window and found his father lying on the floor, death having taken place probably several hours before.
George W. Schreffler was born at Gratz, March 26, 1857, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schreffler. Following the death of his father, a Civil War veteran, he was admitted to the Soldiers’ Orphanage School at Camp Hill, Harrisburg. From that school he came to Lykens when 16 years of age.
In 1878 he went to Harrisburg, where he secured a position with the Harrisburg Star Independent, now consolidated with the Harrisburg Telegraph and followed the trade at that place until 1883, when he returned to Lykens and accepted the position of foreman at the breaker which he held until September 1889, when he joined the Lykens Standard force. He worked earnestly in his position with the Standard, always awake for the betterment of the public and fought unfalteringly that which he deemed wrong. In capacity of local editor he left the Standard four years ago, but came here at intervals and assisted when work became rushed. His last visit here was in November of last year. At that time he was recalled to take up the position where his death occurred.
November 2, 1875, he married Elizabeth John of Lykens, who survives with the following children: Miss Sadie Schreffler, Waller Schreffler, Robert Schreffler, and William Schreffler, all of Philadelphia; George Schreffler and Susan Gunderman (Mrs. H. A. Gunderman), of Harrisburg; Mayme Kinsey (Mrs. G. C. Kinsey), John Schreffler and Harry Schreffler, all of Lykens; twenty-nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Fraternally he was a member of the F. A. U., (formerly Heptasopha) of which he was past president.
The funeral was held from the Schreffler home, 6419 Beechwood Street, Philadelphia, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 with services by the Rev. P. Hodgson of the Philadelphia Methodist Church, and burial was made in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, that place.
