OFFICIALS OF GRATZ MUST REFUND $682
George E. Hepler, president, and J. A. Willier, secretary of the Gratz Borough Council, were ordered by the Dauphin County Courts Monday to repay to the borough sums aggregating $682 said to have been received by them from the borough in 1921.
Hepler is surcharged with $382.50 received by him, the surcharge says, for a stone crusher sold to the borough and with $264.50 paid by him by the borough for labor and team hire. Willier must pay back to the borough treasury his salary of $25 as borough secretary.
Judge Fox decided Monday that Hepler and Willier had received the money unlawfully since an act of legislature prohibits borough councilmen from receiving any compensation by virtue of their office.
The decision was given in exceptions filed against the borough auditor for 1921 by Monroe E. Klinger, P. J. Artz, A. S. Ritzman and other taxpayers.
