From the Lykens Standard, April 18, 1924:
WICONISCO YOUTH SMOTHERED IN MINES
An outburst of gas at Short Mountain Colliery Friday morning of last week was fatal to Eugene Machamer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Machamer, Wiconisco. Samuel O. Hoover of this place was also caught in the same place of working but managed to escape without injury.
Eugene Anton Machamer, 23 years, 1 month and 1 day of age, was a resident of Wiconisco about 16 years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Machamer and was born at Dillimide, Jefferson County, Alabama. In 1904 he came to Wiconisco with his parents and resided there until 1912 when he went to Larkville, Luzerne County, where he lived until 1916 when he again returned to Wiconisco where he since resided.
Surviving are his parents, one brother Lewis Machamer of Wiconisco; one sister, Caroline Machamer, at home, and one half-brother, Edwin Edwards, also of Wiconisco.
Machamer was a member of L. & W. P. A. A. ball team, this place, and last season played in numerous games, with a good record. The team loses an enthusiastic and good member in his death.
Fraternally he was connected with the Unite Mine Workers of America, and was also a member of the Baptist church. His funeral was held Monday with services at his home by the Rev. H. D. Germer of the Baptist Church, after which burial was made in the Wiconisco Cemetery.
