The two charts above were compiled and used as part of an analysis of the results of the Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Election of 1866, an election which pitted a Civil War Union general and hero, John W. Geary, against Heister Clymer, an avowed racist who campaigned against citizenship for and the granting of the suffrage to anyone other members of the “white race.” Geary won the election, but not by a landslide. The analysis was given in a blog post, Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Election of 1866 – The Defeat of a White Supremacist, published on September 16, 2016.
