Lykens Township – Troutman School Teachers, 1859-1919

At this time, not much is known about the teachers who taught at the Troutman School (or Trautman School), Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, except the following that has been reconstructed from information that appeared in local newspapers, memories of those who attended, and fragmentary school records which have survived.

The following is an incomplete list of teachers of the Troutman School:

1859.  James Troutman.

1864.  Isaac R. Troutman (who was living in Elias Troutman‘s house).

1873 (pre).  J. Franklin Boyer.

1885.  M. H. Zerfing or I. N. Henninger.

1886.  D. I. Coleman.

1889.  Emanuel A. Dockey.

1890.  J. F. Billman.

1891.  J. A. Saltzer.

1895.  Charles Dockey.

1897.  Fred Daniel (information from newspaper that he was appointed, but may not accept).

1898.  Joseph Kissinger.

1899.  Sally Daniel.

1900.  John A. Keener.

1901.  Clarence Hoffman.

1902.  Cloyd Miller.

1903.  Christiana Boyer.

1904.  H. E. Klinger.

1913.  Harry Longabach (who boarded with John Troutman & Polly Troutman)

1919.  Paul Hartman*

Other persons identified as teachers at the Troutman School, with no dates given:  Henry Wenrich; Harry E. Klinger; Lloyd Bellis; Raymond J. Coleman;  Stella Shadle**

*Paul Hartman rode a bicycle from the east end of Gratz where he lived.  It was believed that he had only five pupils in his class, plus two girls who were living in the stone house.

**Stella Shadle was the daughter of Cyrus Shadle and Lydia Shadle.  She rode a horse to school from Klingerstown, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and “packed” a revolver to protect herself and her students from stray dogs.
