Milton A. Hartman was born in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 28 January 1867, the son of Michael Hartman (1835-1904), a farmer in Lykens Township and Catherine [Hess] Hartman (1841-1902). Milton married Sallie J. Riegel on 4 August 1894 at Simeon Lutheran Church, Gratz, Dauphin County. The couple had four children, two of whom survived to adulthood.
The oldest child, Maud Agnes Hartman, was born 21 January 1895 and is pictured here with her parents. She married Harry Clayton Zerfing (1888-1976) at Elizabethville on 28 June 1919. Harry was a music teacher in 1920, 1930 and 1940. They had two children who survived to adulthood. Maud died in 1945 and Harry died in 1976. They are buried at Elizabethville‘s Maple Grove Cemetery.
Milton was a farmer in 1900, had his “own income” in 1910, was a “retired farmer” in 1920, and was a laborer at the Colonnade Theater in Millersburg in 1930. He gave no occupation to the census in 1940. The couple lived in Gratz in 1900, 1910, and 1920, but moved to Upper Paxton Township in 1930 where they also lived in 1940. Milton A. Hartman died on 27 January 1941 and Sallie died on 19 May 1971 in Millersburg where she lived as a widow with her daughter Hilda [Hartman] Cooper. Both Milton and Sallie are buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Elizabethville.
