The front and back of a report card [Teacher’s Report to Parents] from the Geise School (also known as the Gise School), Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, school year 1907-1908.
The teacher for the year was Anna A. Schoffstall..
Times tardy, 1/2 days absent, and days absent were noted.
The student, probably a 7th Grader at the time, was marked in the following subjects: Reading; Writing; Arithmetic; Spelling; Grammar; Geography; U. S. History; Physiology; Civics; Algebra; and Mental.
In addition to the subjects, the student was graded on Effort and Deportment.
On the back of the card was the School Law, 11 July 1901, in brief:
Every parent, guardian or person having control of children between the ages of 8 and 16 years must send them to a day school continuously during the entire time of the session of the school district in which they reside.
Failure to comply with the above, on conviction before a justice of the peace, magistrate or alderman, will be punishable. For the first offense a fine of $2 or 2 days in the county jail, and for each conviction thereafter a fine of $5 or 5 days in the county jail.
It is the teacher’s duty to notify the attendance officer, superintendent or secretary of the board of directors, the names of all scholars who have been absent 3 days or their equivalent without lawful excuse; and they shall notify in writing the parent, guardian, or person having control of absentee.A disregard of said written notice, or any part of said law, will be a sufficient cause for legal action by the superintendent, truant officer, or secretary of the school district.
Lines were provided for the signature of the parent or guardian for each of 10 months.
