MINER KILLER IN EXPLOSION OF DYNAMITE
Earl Luther Michael, age 30 years, of Williamstown, was instantly killed in an explosion of dynamite in an independent coal mine near Williamstown Tuesday afternoon.
Three other men, John Shutt, Mark Hoffman and William Shutt, also of Williamstown, also engaged in the independent working, escaped serious injury.
According to advices, Michael had left his companions to secure and prepare a “shot” of dynamite, which was stored in another part of the mine, some distance from the scene of actual operations.
Two of the men had been working with Michael inside the mine. Following the explosion, they investigated and discovered that Michael had been killed instantly, his body having been mangled by the blast.
Mr. Michael was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Michael and was a native of Tower City.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ruth [Pennell] Michael, and five children: Betty Michael; Dolores Michael; Earl Michael; Ruth Michael; and John Michael, all at home. Other survivors are two brothers, Frank Michael and Wayne Michael, of Williamstown; and three sisters, Mrs. Aaron Teter, of Millersburg R. D.,; Mrs. Alvin Wolfe, Tower City; and Mrs. William Shutt, of Williamstown.
Funeral services were held from the Dodson Funeral Home in Williamstown Wednesday afternoon. Rev. H. E. Berkey, pastor of the Williamstown Lutheran Church, officiated, and interment was made by the Methodist Cemetery, at that place.
