In 1917, the William Dietrich family lived in Harrisburg where there was work in the steel mills. Helen [Hoffman] Dietrich shown above on a visit to her home in Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, among chickens, which were raised by the three women who were operating the farm, Lizzie Riegle (Helen’s mother); Hannah [Rickert] Riegle (Helen’s grandmother); and Becky Rickert (Helen’s aunt). The women sold eggs to earn needed money and Lizzie contracted herself out as a midwife and nurse to area families. On the visit to her home, Helen brought her daughter, Kathryn [Dietrich] Gasbarro, whose appearance was also documented in the farmyard with the photo shown below.
Becky died in 1918. After Hannah died in 1919, William and Helen purchased the homestead and Lizzie lived with them until she died in 1942.
