Both sides of an original Selective Service “Registration Certificate,” World War II era, for the “Old Men’s Draft.” While some of the information at the edges of the card is worn away, most of the information on the card is easy to read.
This represents the fact that William Edward Dietrich of Lykens Township (Specktown), Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, was duly registered for the draft (selective service). The registration was accomplished on 27 April, probably 1942, and signed by the Registrar, Doris J. Updegrove.
On the back of the card is noted the fact that the registrant was of the white “race,” was 5 foot 11 inches tall, had brown hair, brown eyes, and a light complexion.
The “Old Men’s Draft was for all men who were born on or after 28 April 1877 and on or before 16 February 1897. William E. Dietrich was born on 15 November 1896 and was required to register.
A copy of the registration card, shown above from Ancestry.com, indicates his age (45 years), his birthplace as Lykens, Dauphin County, and the person who will always know his address as Helen M. Dietrich (his wife). He indicated that his employer was Roman Shadle and John Hall, Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
